Asian AIDS Resources

The impact of AIDS in Asia is staggering. Although Africa has the largest number of people living with HIV, South and South-East Asia is the region where HIV is spreading fastest.

Some experts estimate that there are as many as six million Asians infected with the HIV virus, more than the total number of persons elsewhere in the entire industrialized world. Some Asian countries suffer from low per capita incomes, dramatic inequities in income distribution, and poor healthcare infrastructure, making it difficult or impossible to provide high quality medical care to those who need it.

Growth House is located in San Francisco, a major hub city for Pacific Rim activity. The Bay Area has a large Asian and Pacific Islander population drawn from many countries. We offer this directory of Asian resources to recognize the linguistic and cultural diversity in our Asian population. This directory is also available in a searchable form using our search engine.

Sea-AIDS
A moderated electronic mail discussion list for people involved with HIV and AIDS services in Southeast Asia. SEA-AIDSFlash, a bi-weekly update on HIV/AIDS in the region, including details of new materials available, media coverage in the region, forthcoming events and new internet resources, is sent free to all Sea-AIDS members.
Southeast Asia AIDS/HIV Information
A compendium of links to information for many countries in this region. Has a list of safer sex education guidelines translated into several Southeast Asian languages.
Health Action Information Network (HAIN)
HAIN has been designated as a UNAIDS Information Center in the Philippines and as a coordinating center for resource centers in the region.

Thailand

Ministry of Public Health Information Network of Thailand
Includes epidemiological information, public health news and some vital health statistics. Includes AIDS/HIV information and a list of known web servers in Thailand. Bilingual in Thai and English.

Malaysia, Singapore

Action for AIDS Singapore
A community-based local HIV service organization.
Hospis Malaysia
Provides hospice and palliative care services for the Malaysian community, primarily within the Klang Valley. Most patients have cancer, AIDS, progressive degenerative neuromuscular disease, or organ failure with limited life expectancy.
CARAM-Asia
Coordination of Action Research on AIDS and Mobility (CARAM-Asia) works to protect the human rights and health status of migrant workers in general with specific emphasis on how migration contributes to increased vulnerability to HIV infection. CARAM-Asia is a member of the UNAIDS Task Force on Migrant Labour and HIV Vulnerability. Web site includes links to a number of partner organizations in the region. CARAM-Asia is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Indonesia

Spiritia
A peer support group for Indonesian PWAs and their families and friends. Provides information on treatments and conducts advocacy on behalf of PWAs in Indonesia.

Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center
Provides culturally and linguistically-sensitive HIV/AIDS prevention education programs and serves as a community resource for Asian and Pacific Islander communities in San Francisco. This agency is the product of a merger of the Asian AIDS Project and the Living Well Project.
