The Department of Pain Management and Palliative Care at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York provides high-quality, detailed information for both caregivers and professionals. Content includes an extensive line of print publications on hospice care, pain management, caregiving for special situations, bereavement, and related topics. The Program for Pain Due to Nerve Injury aims to improve the care of persons suffering with neuropathic pain conditions, such as postherpetic neuralgia, painful polyneuropathy, and other neurological problems. Materials on end-of-life care include helpful reviews of common physical symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath. The affiliated Jacob Perlow Hospice serves New York city.

Worldwide Congress On Pain [icon]
Extensive searchable databases of pain articles and professional directories, with oversight by an editorial board of medical professionals. Offers online CME/CE credits for physicians, CRNAs, and RNs on various pain management topics for a nominal processing fee, making this one of the better online medical education resources we've seen. While not specific to terminal care, issues relevant to palliative medicine are included. Includes an excellent link list of specialized medical sites.

American Pain Society [icon]
Multidisciplinary professional organization offering publications and professional practice guidelines. Site includes guidelines for management of cancer pain.

International Association for the Study of Pain [icon]
A non-profit membership organization for health professionals interested in pain management. Authorities in the clinical assessment and management of pain, their definition of the word "pain" is the one used in the Oxford Textbook Of Palliative Medicine.

American Academy Of Pain Management [icon]
Provides Board Certification to pain management practitioners in the United States. Website includes a searchable directory of members and over 450 pain management programs.

Canadian Pain Society [icon]
The Canadian Pain Society is a chapter of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Membership includes health care professionals and lay persons with an interest in the field of pain. The goals of the society are many however its main focus is to foster and encourage research on pain mechanisms and pain syndromes and to help improve the management of patients with acute and chronic pain by bringing together the basic scientists and health professionals of various disciplines and backgrounds who have an interest in pain research and management. The Society's' web site contains several helpful resources including a Grants/Awards section (small grants are offered in support of projects designed to improve pain management or to promote education about pain); an on-line newsletter; links to other pain-related web resources; and the journal Pain Research and Management. Membership information is also offered for those interested in joining the Society. Of particular interest to the palliative care community is the Society's' Position Statement on Pain Relief and also their Pediatric Pain Source Book. The position statement can serve as a useful guideline for the management of pain caused by cancer and other illnesses.

Mayday Pain and Palliative Care Resource Center (City of Hope) [icon]
The purpose of the City of Hope Pain and Palliative Care Resource Center (COHPPRC) is to serve as a clearinghouse for information and resources to assist health care professionals in improving the quality of pain management and end of life care. The COHPPRC, established in 1995, is a central source for collecting a variety of materials including pain assessment tools, clinical pathways, patient education materials, quality assurance materials, cost related to pain management, end-of-life resources, research instruments and other materials.

City of Hope Pain Resource Center [icon]
This web site maintains a useful index of pain management resources for both pain professionals and health care consumers. A well-organized site index covers pain resources by topic area. Contents include pain bibliographies, assessment instruments, nursing and physician education materials, patient education tools, pediatric pain, costs related to pain management, and other specialized areas. A key feature of the site is that copies of many resources can be ordered in print form for a nominal charge, making hard-to-find items easily accessible.

Pediatric Pain [icon]
The Pediatric Pain site is maintained by IWK Grace Health Centre and the Psychology Department of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Resources for professionals and also self-help information is provided. Visitors can access clinical tools and also subscribe to the Pediatric Pain Letter and the Pediatric Pain Mailing List. Links to other relevant sites are also offered. This is a useful site for anyone who must manage pain in children.

PAIN-L Discussion List [icon]
An email discussion list for the discussion of chronic pain, with over 1,300 subscribers. Most of the traffic is from people living with pain who are exchanging information with one another about resources. The charter for the list emphasizes that it is a conference about life, not death. Death is never encouraged as a solution to pain. The philosophy is that every effort should be made to minimize physical pain in order to preserve a tolerable and worthwhile quality of life. University Of Wisconsin Pain and Policy Studies Group [icon]
A World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Policy and Communications in Cancer Care. This site provides an authoritative review of international public policy in relationship to pain management. Online content includes model guidelines for the use of controlled substances such as opioid medications for pain management, U.S. state medical board policies, detailed reviews of Asia, Europe, and Latin America, discussion of the relationship between pain management policies and demand for physician assisted suicide, and links to major pain management resources on the net.

Mayday Upper Peninsula Pain Project [icon]
Provides an excellent collection of pain links, including resources for chronic pain, cancer, pediatric pain, pain and depression, and other special pain management issues. Has a specific regional commitment to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is adjacent to Wisconsin and Minnesota, but most links are of general information value.

Hypnosis and Suggestion in the Treatment of Pain [icon]

The American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA) is a non-profit organization with operations in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, India, Jordan, and Russia. Over 400 international chapters provide a support system for people with chronic pain through education in pain management skills and self-help group activities. Groups are open to anyone with chronic pain, regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, or the source of the pain.

North American Chronic Pain Association of Canada [icon]
NACPAC is a self-help organization for people in chronic pain. Web site includes a directory of Canadian pain clinics and pain specialists, plus pain management links.
