Canadian Pain Society [icon]
The Canadian Pain Society is a chapter of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Membership includes health care professionals and lay persons with an interest in the field of pain. The goals of the society are many however its main focus is to foster and encourage research on pain mechanisms and pain syndromes and to help improve the management of patients with acute and chronic pain by bringing together the basic scientists and health professionals of various disciplines and backgrounds who have an interest in pain research and management. The Society's' web site contains several helpful resources including a Grants/Awards section (small grants are offered in support of projects designed to improve pain management or to promote education about pain); an on-line newsletter; links to other pain-related web resources; and the journal Pain Research and Management. Membership information is also offered for those interested in joining the Society. Of particular interest to the palliative care community is the Society's' Position Statement on Pain Relief and also their Pediatric Pain Source Book. The position statement can serve as a useful guideline for the management of pain caused by cancer and other illnesses.

Children's Cancer Group (CCG) [icon]
A cooperative research organization based in the United States. Founded in 1955, it's highest scientific priority is to transition new biological research findings into clinical trials to benefit children with cancer. The National Childhood Cancer Foundation (NCCF) is CCG's fiscal agent and sponsor. CCG members include over 2,500 pediatric cancer specialists located at over 115 pediatric medical centers in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Website includes links to other cooperative oncology groups, cancer directories, clinical trial information, and resources for kids affected by serious illness.

Childhood Cancer Research Group, Oxford University [icon]
Responsible for the National Registry Of Childhood Tumors in the U.K., the group collaborates on clinical and epidemiological research, particularly with members of the U.K. Children's Cancer Study Group.

Kitchen Table Wisdom [icon]
By Naomi Rachel Remen, M.D. An inspirational best-selling book on dealing with serious and chronic illness. The author was formerly a pediatrician and now calls herself a "psycho-oncologist" counseling people with cancer. Herself a long-term survior of the chronic Crohn's Disease, she speaks from many years of experience working with illness. Kitchen-table common sense is sprinkled with Zen teachings and Buddhist wisdom. There's some bias for "New Age" jargon, but the book is directed at a general audience and is of non-denominational value.

The Cancer Chemotherapy Handbook [icon]
Called the "Bible of Chemotherapy" by some, this new edition is concisely written yet comprehensive in scope. It's an authoritative practical guide to the more than 85 specific drugs currently used in cancer treatment. This edition includes new chapters on pediatric cancer therapy, high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell support, blood transfusion therapy, and pain management. The expanded index covers special toxicity criteria associated with transplantation. Published May, 1997.

Nursing Care of Children and Adolescents With Cancer [icon]
Third Edition, 2002. Written by the Association of Paediatric Oncology Nurses (APON), the newly organized and expanded third edition of Nursing Care of Children and Adolescents with Cancer stands alone as the definitive work examining the foundations, treatments, and supportive care of children and adolescents with cancer. Most importantly, content specific to cancer in adolescents has been interspersed into this edition, highlighting the differences in child and adolescent cancer and treatment. This edition includes revised chapters, with 33 chapters discussing the child's stressors, and the roles and responsibilities of the nurse.

Children's Oncology Group [icon]
The Children's Oncology Group is a National Cancer Institute-supported clinical trials cooperative group devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. COG develops and coordinates cancer clinical trials conducted at the 238 member institutions, which include cancer centers of all major universities and teaching hospitals throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as sites in Europe and Australia. COG members include over 5000 cancer researchers dedicated to saving the lives of children with cancer.

Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, Inc. [icon]
Fanconi anemia is a fatal recessive genetic disease that children are born with. Most do not survive through their early twenties. People with Fanconi anemia often develop leukemia and other cancers.

Children's Care Coalition [icon]
Promote compassionate care for children with cancer in California. On referral from hospital staff can provide some direct support services to families. Has offices in Northern California and Southern California.
