CIF : Coding Standards : META Tags and Search Engines
Certain META tags are very important to search engines. Terms used in these tags have heavy weight in ordering search results. Each CIF card should include optimized META tags specific to that card.
- The KEYWORDS tag is used to place emphasis on specific words. The selection of keywords is an art. To avoid having the search engine reject your card out of hand, do not repeat any single keyword more than three times in a META tag. Most search engines have a higher threshold for keyword spamming, but use of the lower threshold will guarantee that you come in under their radar. Keywords should be capitalized in the keyword list because some search engines are case-sensitive, and capitalization matches the widest range of user inputs. For example, the keywords for a CIF flash card describing a rose named "Samaritan" might be :
<META name="keywords" content="SAMARITAN, HYBRID TEA, APRICOT">
- Some search engines display the text of the DESCRIPTION tag to users, so attractive phrasing increases click throughs. All CIF pages should contain a Description tag which is optimized for that particular card. Capitalization should be appropriate for normal text. Subtle repetition of important keywords will help with search engine positioning. For example, this tag for a CIF flash card uses the word rose twice:
<META name="description" content="Description of the hybrid tea rose Samaritan, which grows in the Growth House, Inc., rose garden.">
