Opioid-related Neurotoxicity : Underlying Mechanisms

The underlying mechanisms that result in opioid neurotoxicities are not well known. It is postulated that the accumulation and/or imbalance of active opioid metabolites are responsible for these syndromes. However, it is possible that the opioid parent compounds themselves may play a role. Further research is required to elucidate the causes and pathophysiological processes of these toxicities.
