Opioid-related Neurotoxicity : Addition of other drugs

Neuroleptics such as haloperidol can be helpful in controlling symptoms such as hallucinations and agitation. Benzodiasepines are generally not suggested for the treatment of delirium, except in the rare cases where severe delirium-related agitation does not respond to attempts at addressing underlying causes and neuroleptic agents. In these uncommon cases, midazolam can be useful. Numerous drugs have been suggested to treat myoclonus, including baclofen, midazolam, clonazepam, and anticonvulsants. The addition of these drugs do however not address the underlying problem and the polypharmacy can confound the situtation. Some authors have suggested using adjuavant analgesics to spare the opioids. As with all drugs, these too may have significant adverse effects.
